Ripple Foods is a company from California that makes tasty drinks and other foods. They use something special called pea protein to create dairy-free products. This means their products are made from plants, not from animals like cows.
The company was started in 2014 by two friends, Adam Lowry and Neil Renninger. They began their journey in a city called Emeryville, in California. In 2017, Ripple Foods teamed up with a food distributor to bring their pea protein drinks to stores in Canada.
What Ripple Foods Makes
When Ripple Foods first started, they sold drinks made from peas. These drinks came in popular flavors like original, vanilla, and chocolate. You could find them in big stores across the United States, such as Whole Foods Market and Target.
How Pea Milk is Made
Ripple's pea protein drink is made from a few simple ingredients. It includes water, and a special protein that comes from powdered yellow peas. They also add a little bit of cane sugar, sunflower oil, and some vitamins. To make sure it tastes good and stays fresh, they add natural flavors and a thickener called guar gum.
One cool thing about their process is how they get the pea protein. They separate the protein from the parts of the pea that give it a strong taste or color. This way, the drink tastes smooth and delicious, not like peas! Later, Ripple Foods also started selling smaller, single-serve bottles and kid-friendly cartons.
Other Pea-Based Products
In July 2017, Ripple Foods introduced a pea protein version of half and half. This is a creamy liquid often used in coffee or for cooking. It came in original and vanilla flavors.
By the end of 2017, they also launched a Greek-style yogurt made from peas. This yogurt was available in five different flavors. The company has also planned to release pea protein-based ice cream and cheese products. Ripple's vegan ice cream even got a good score for being kind to the environment!
