Whitewater on the Cassley

The River Cassley is a beautiful river located in Sutherland, a northern part of Scotland. It's known for its clear waters and the amazing journey it takes before reaching the sea. The Cassley joins another river called the River Oykel to create a larger body of water known as the Kyle of Sutherland. This Kyle then meets up with more rivers, the River Shin and the River Carron, before flowing into the Dornoch Firth, which is like a big inlet of the sea. Finally, its waters reach the vast North Sea.

You can find a main road bridge crossing the River Cassley at a place called Rosehall. This bridge is about halfway between where the river starts and a stunning natural wonder called the Achness Falls (also known as Cassley Falls). These falls are a really impressive sight!

What Makes the River Cassley Special?

The River Cassley is quite famous, much like its neighbor, the River Oykel. It's especially well-known for its excellent fishing opportunities.

Fishing in the Cassley

The river is a popular spot for catching two types of fish:

  • Salmon: These are large, powerful fish that swim upriver from the sea to lay their eggs.
  • Trout: These are smaller, freshwater fish that live in the river all year round.

Many people enjoy fishing here because the river has plenty of these fish.

Where to Stay and Get Help

If you're interested in fishing on the lower part of the River Cassley, there's a place called the Achaness Hotel in Rosehall. This hotel owns the fishing rights for that part of the river. It's a great place for visiting fishermen to stay. The hotel also provides 'ghillies' (pronounced "GILL-ees"). Ghillies are experienced local guides who can help fishermen find the best spots and offer advice on how to catch fish.
