The River Deel (which is called An Daoil in Irish) is an important river in Ireland. It flows through two counties: County Cork and County Limerick.

This river starts its journey in the north of County Cork and then travels north into County Limerick. It flows for more than 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) before it reaches the Shannon Estuary.

Where Does the River Deel Flow?

The River Deel begins its journey near a place called Dromina in north County Cork. From there, it flows northwards.

As it travels, the river passes by several towns and areas. First, it goes through Milford and near Belville bridge.

Then, it continues towards Castlemahon (also known as Mahoonagh) and the nearby town of Newcastle West. The river runs alongside the main N21 road, which connects Limerick and Killarney.

After passing these areas, the River Deel reaches the town of Rathkeale. It then crosses the N21 road again.

The river keeps flowing north until it reaches Askeaton. Finally, it crosses the N69 road before entering the wide Shannon Estuary about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) further north.

What Does the Name "Deel" Mean?

The name "Deel" comes from an old Irish word, daol. This word means "beetle," "insect," or "worm."

The river got this name because of its shape. It doesn't flow in a straight line. Instead, it has many twists, turns, and bends, much like a worm or an insect might move.

Can You Fish in the River Deel?

In the past, the River Deel was a very popular spot for fishing. People used to catch a lot of salmon and grilse (which are young salmon) there.

Today, the river is mainly known for brown trout fishing. While salmon might still be found, it's not as common as it once was.
