River Moselle (London) facts for kids
The River Moselle is a small river in North London. It flows through an area called Tottenham and then heads towards the Lea Valley. This river used to flow directly into the River Lea, but now it joins another stream called Pymmes Brook, which then flows into the Lea.
What's in a Name?
The name 'Moselle' comes from 'Mosse-Hill' in Hornsey. This is a high area where one of the river's sources (where it starts) is located. So, the name has nothing to do with the much larger Moselle River in Europe. The hill also gave its name to the area known as Muswell Hill. For a while, people even called the river the Moswell.
Where Does the River Flow?
The Moselle flows mostly northeast. It goes through Lordship Recreation Ground, then reaches High Road near the junction with White Hart Lane. From there, it continues along High Road to a spot near Scotland Green. Finally, it flows eastward until it meets the River Lea.
The River's History
Today, the Moselle is quite a small stream. However, a long time ago, it was much bigger and could cause serious floods in Tottenham. Until the 1800s, the entire river flowed above ground. But in 1836, the part of the river around Tottenham High Road and White Hart Lane was covered over. More sections were covered in 1906 and in the years that followed. Now, the river is completely underground from Tottenham Cemetery until it joins Pymmes Brook.
