The River Stour is a river in England. It starts in Oxfordshire county. But it mostly flows through Warwickshire. The Stour is a smaller river that flows into a bigger one. This is called a tributary. It joins the River Avon. This meeting point is near Stratford-upon-Avon.

Where the River Stour Begins

The River Stour starts from a natural spring. This spring is found near a place called Highways Farm. It is just south of the village of Swalcliffe. This area is in the county of Oxfordshire.

Journey Through Counties

After starting, the river flows about 3 kilometers (which is about 1.8 miles) to the west. Here, it crosses an important line. This line is the border between Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. It crosses near a spot known as Traitor's Ford.

Towns and Villages Along the Stour

The River Stour flows through many interesting places. The very first village it reaches is Stourton. After Stourton, the river changes direction. It turns and flows towards the north.

Passing Through Shipston-on-Stour

The river then reaches the town of Shipston-on-Stour. This town's name even includes the river's name! It shows how important the river is to the area.

Following the River's Path

A main road, the A3400 road, generally follows the river's path. It goes all the way to Stratford-upon-Avon. Along this route, the river passes through several more villages. These include Tredington, Halford, Alderminster, Newbold-on-Stour, Atherstone-on-Stour, and Clifford Chambers. Each of these places has a connection to the River Stour.
