The Rivière de l'Ours is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. This river is located on Anticosti Island, which is part of the Minganie Regional County Municipality.
The area around the river is mostly forest. The main activity here is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. People also visit for fun activities like tourism.
Where the Bear River Starts and Ends
The Bear River begins in a small lake on Anticosti Island. This lake is about 175 m (574 ft) above sea level.
- It starts about 127 km (79 mi) northeast of Port-Menier, a village on the island.
- It's also about 83 km (52 mi) west of the eastern tip of Anticosti Island.
From its start, the Bear River flows for about 15.9 km (9.9 mi). It drops about 174 m (571 ft) in height as it flows through the forest.
The River's Journey
The river flows in two main parts:
- For the first 4.4 km (2.7 mi), it goes northeast. Along the way, another small stream joins it from the west.
- Then, it continues for another 11.5 km (7.1 mi) northeast until it reaches its end.
The Bear River empties into a place called Bear Bay. This bay is on the north side of Anticosti Island. The entrance to Bear Bay is about 2.2 km (1.4 mi) wide. It goes inland for about 1.6 km (0.99 mi).
Why is it Called "Bear River"?
The name "Rivière de l'Ours" means "Bear River" in French. This name was officially recognized on September 12, 1974. It was added to the Place Names Bank by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special group that names places in Quebec.
