The Baie des Rochers River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the big St. Lawrence River. This river is located near the town of Saint-Siméon. It's part of the Charlevoix-Est Regional County Municipality in the Capitale-Nationale area. The river even passes through the village of Baie-des-Rochers before reaching the St. Lawrence River.

This small river valley is easy to get to. Roads like "rue des Tours" and "rue de la Chapelle" lead to it. These roads connect to Route 138. Route 138 runs along the St. Lawrence River. It crosses over the Baie des Rochers River right in the village.

The main activity in this area is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. Tourism is also important. Many people visit for holidays and fun activities.

The river usually freezes over in the winter. This happens from mid-December until late March. It's generally safe to walk or play on the ice from late December to mid-March.

Where the River Flows

The Baie des Rochers River is surrounded by other important water areas. Here are some of them:

River's Journey

The Baie des Rochers River starts at Baie aux Rochers Lake. This lake is about 200 m (660 ft) above sea level. It's in a forest area. There are holiday homes around the lake's southeast side. A small road helps people get to this area.

From the lake, the river flows for about 9.9 km (6.2 mi). Here's how it travels:

  • It goes north for 2.4 km (1.5 mi). It flows through Long Lake, which is 2.1 km (1.3 mi) long.
  • Then, it turns east for 1.3 km (0.81 mi). It crosses Écluse Lake and Lake Carp. Écluse Lake gets water from two smaller lakes, Petit Lac Emmuraillé and Petit Lac à Bec Croche.
  • Next, it flows east for 2.3 km (1.4 mi). It passes under large power lines. It also collects water from Lac à Pitre. This part of the river reaches the bridge on Route 138 in the village of Baie-des-Rochers.
  • Finally, it goes east for 3.9 km (2.4 mi). It picks up water from Gervais Lake. Near the end, it goes through areas with rapids and waterfalls. The river then empties into the Baie des Rochers, which opens into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Why the Name "Baie des Rochers"?

The name "Baie des Rochers" means "Bay of Rocks." This name comes from all the rocks found around the bay. There's even an island in the middle of the bay called "Baie des Rochers Island," which also has many rocks.

The official name "Rivière de la Baie des Rochers" was made formal on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Quebec, which names places in Quebec.
