The Rivière des Sept Ponts is a cool river in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Its name means "river of the seven bridges" in English. It flows through the Beauport and Charlesbourg areas. This river is a tributary, which means it's a smaller river that flows into a bigger one. The Rivière des Sept Ponts flows into the Rivière du Berger.

The top part of the river's valley is wild and doesn't have roads. But the lower part, after Lac Bégon, is mostly in city areas. You can find roads like Boulevard Henri-Bourassa nearby.

The river usually freezes from early December to late March. It's safest to walk on the ice from late December to early March. The water level changes with the seasons and how much it rains. The river gets really full in March or April, which is called the spring flood.

Where Does the Rivière des Sept Ponts Start and Go?

The Rivière des Sept Ponts is the second most important river in the watershed of the Rivière du Berger. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into one main river.

How Does the River Begin?

This river starts where two mountain streams meet. This spot is about 330 meters (1,083 feet) high. It's in a forest with mountains, north of the Beauport area.

Here's how far away its source is from other places:

  • About 2.0 kilometers (1.2 miles) southeast of Lac-Beauport.
  • About 0.6 kilometers (0.4 miles) southwest of the top of Montagne des Trois Sommets, a mountain that is 457 meters (1,499 feet) high.
  • About 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) northwest of Lac des Roches. This lake is where the Rivière des Roches begins.
  • About 4.9 kilometers (3.0 miles) north of where the Rivière des Sept Ponts joins the Rivière du Berger.

What Path Does the River Take?

The Rivière des Sept Ponts flows for about 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles). It drops 171 meters (561 feet) from its start to its end.

Here's a look at its journey:

  • For the first 1.6 kilometers (1.0 mile), it flows south. It drops a lot in a steep valley. It then meets the Chicots stream.
  • For the next 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles), it continues south, making a curve to the southwest. It still drops a lot in a deep valley. It also flows through Lac Bégon, which is about 0.3 meters (1 foot) long and 185 meters (607 feet) high.
  • For another 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles), it flows south, crossing Rue de l'Aventure. It then goes through Lac Flamand, which is about 0.18 meters (0.6 feet) long and 175 meters (574 feet) high. Plage-Laurentides is a beach located east of Lac Flamand.
  • For the last 1.0 kilometer (0.6 miles), it flows south into a neighborhood with houses. It crosses streets like Rue du Dublin, Sophia Melvin, and des Nation Est. Finally, it meets the Rivière du Berger.

After joining the Rivière du Berger, the water travels about 17.1 kilometers (10.6 miles) southeast through the city. Then it flows southwest as part of the Berger river. After that, it joins the Saint-Charles River for about 8.3 kilometers (5.2 miles). The Saint-Charles River then flows into the Saint-Laurent river.
