River's Location and Neighbors
The Malin River is surrounded by other important bodies of water. Knowing its neighbors helps us understand its path.
- To the north, you'll find the Jacques-Cartier River and the Rivière du Milieu.
- To the east, there's the Jacques-Cartier River, Chartier Lake, Archambault Lake, the Rocheuse River, and the Montmorency River.
- To the south, you'll see the Rocheuse River, Lac des Alliés, Fragasso Lake, Walsh Lake, and the Rivière à la Chute.
- To the west, there's the Jacques-Cartier River and the rivière Jacques-Cartier Nord-Ouest.
Where the River Starts
The Malin River begins at Lanoraye Lake. This lake is about 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi) long. It sits at a high point, about 781 metres (2,562 ft) above sea level. Lanoraye Lake is also located in the Lac-Jacques-Cartier area.
The lake looks a bit like a rectangle with rounded corners. It even has a small island and a piece of land that sticks out into the water from its northeast side.
The River's Journey
From Lanoraye Lake, the Malin River flows for about 11.0 kilometres (6.8 mi). During its journey, the river drops a total of 431 metres (1,414 ft) in elevation.
Here's how its path unfolds:
- For the first 2.8 kilometres (1.7 mi), it flows south. It makes a big curve towards the east. The valley around the river gets steeper and steeper. It passes a small stream that comes from the northwest.
- Next, for 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi), it flows mostly straight south. It's in a very deep valley here. Then, it turns southwest until it meets the Rocheuse River, which joins it from the south.
- Finally, for the last 4.6 kilometres (2.9 mi), it continues southwest in another very deep valley. It then turns south before reaching its end, which is called its mouth.
After the Malin River meets the Rocheuse River, its water flows into the Jacques-Cartier River. From there, the water travels south until it reaches the northeast bank of the mighty Saint Lawrence River.
Name of the River
The name "Rivière du Malin" was officially recognized on November 7, 1985. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is a group in Quebec responsible for place names.
