The Rivière du Sud (which means South River in English) is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the North Eaton River. From there, its waters travel through several other rivers. These include the Eaton River, the Saint-François River, and finally the mighty Saint Lawrence River.

This river runs through two towns: Saint-Mathias-de-Bonneterre and Newport. Both of these towns are located in the Le Haut-Saint-François Regional County Municipality. This area is part of the Estrie region in Quebec.

Where Does the River Flow?

The Rivière du Sud is surrounded by other rivers and land areas. Knowing these helps us understand its path.

Nearby Waterways

Here are the areas next to the South River:

River's Starting Point

The South River begins in a small mountain lake. This lake is surrounded by marshy areas. You can find this lake in the eastern part of Saint-Mathias-de-Bonneterre. It is very close to the town of Chartierville. The lake is also about 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) northwest of the Canada-US border.

The River's Journey

From its source, the South River flows for about 10.3 kilometres (6.4 mi). It travels south through a forest. The river drops about 190 metres (620 ft) in elevation along its path.

Its journey can be split into two main parts:

  • For the first 4.3 kilometres (2.7 mi), it flows east along the border. Then it turns north until it reaches Route 210.
  • For the next 6.0 kilometres (3.7 mi), it flows northwest until it reaches its mouth. A forest road runs alongside this part of the river.

Where the River Ends

The South River empties into the south bank of the North Eaton River. This meeting point is about 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) upstream from where Christmas Creek joins the North Eaton River.

What's in a Name?

The name Rivière du Sud means "South River." It was officially given this name on December 5, 1968. This decision was made by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is a group that names places in Quebec.
