The Rivière aux Cailloux is a river in Quebec, Canada. Its name means Pebble River in English. This river flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. It is located on Anticosti Island, which is part of the Minganie Regional County Municipality. This area is in the North Shore region of Quebec.

A large part of the river's middle section forms the western edge of a special protected area called SÉPAQ Anticosti. The main road on Anticosti Island, which goes from east to west, runs near the upper part of this river valley. Other smaller roads connect to it, helping with forest activities. The main activity in this area is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. Tourism, like visiting for fun, is also important.

Where the River Starts and Flows

The Rivière aux Cailloux begins at a lake called Lac Noël. This lake is about 0.8 kilometers long and sits 111 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by marshy areas, which are like wetlands.

Lac Noël is located in the central-west part of Anticosti Island. It is about 43.2 kilometers northeast of the village of Port-Menier. The lake is also about 4.7 kilometers south of the island's north shore. It is 21.7 kilometers north of the island's south shore.

From Lac Noël, the Rivière aux Cailloux flows south. It runs between the Sainte-Marie River to its west and the Sainte-Anne River to its east. The river drops about 110 meters as it flows for 27.3 kilometers.

The Upper Part of the River

The first 10.1 kilometers of the Rivière aux Cailloux flow south.

  • It first goes through a narrow marshy area for 1.6 kilometers.
  • Then, it enters Lake Lejeune, which is 0.86 kilometers long. The river crosses this lake for 0.3 kilometers, heading southwest.
  • After the lake, it flows south for 5.4 kilometers. Along this part, it goes under the main east-west road of the island. It also collects water from two small streams.
  • The river then turns southeast for 3.1 kilometers, collecting water from two more streams. It makes a loop to the north before reaching the north shore of Lac aux Cailloux.

The Lower Part of the River

The last 17.2 kilometers of the Rivière aux Cailloux continue south.

  • For 11.2 kilometers, it flows through Lac aux Cailloux, which is 1.2 kilometers long. This part of the river is quite straight. It collects water from Lac Perdu and another stream. From the middle of Lac aux Cailloux, the river forms the western border of the SÉPAQ Anticosti territory.
  • Finally, it flows for 6.0 kilometers, collecting water from Petit lac aux Cailloux. It then reaches its mouth, where it empties into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

The mouth of the Rivière aux Cailloux is on the south shore of Anticosti Island. It is about 3.5 kilometers east of Cap Sainte-Marie. It is also 3.0 kilometers west of Anse Sainte-Anne, where the Sainte-Anne River flows. The river's mouth is about 39.6 kilometers east of the center of Port-Menier village.
