The Rivière à la Loutre (which means "Otter River" in French) is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. This river is located on Anticosti Island, which is part of the Minganie Regional County Municipality in the Côte-Nord region.
The area around the river is mostly covered by forests. Because of this, cutting down trees (forestry) is the main way people make a living here. Many people also visit the area for fun activities like hiking or fishing.
Where Does the River Start?
The Rivière à la Loutre begins at a place called Long Lake. This lake is in the middle-west part of Anticosti Island. Long Lake is about 3.4 km (2.1 mi) long.
The river's starting point is about 31.8 km (19.8 mi) east of Port-Menier, which is a village on the island. It's also about 14.9 km (9.3 mi) from the north shore and 17.1 km (10.6 mi) from the south shore of Anticosti Island.
How the River Flows
From Long Lake, the Rivière à la Loutre travels about 29.6 km (18.4 mi) until it reaches the sea.
First, the river flows north for about 9.6 km (6.0 mi). It makes a big curve, almost like a U-turn, which is about 4.0 km (2.5 mi) wide. This part of the river goes up to the edge of a protected area called SÉPAQ Anticosti.
Next, the river turns and flows south for about 13.6 km (8.5 mi). It forms the western border of the SÉPAQ Anticosti park. Near the end of this section, it makes a small turn to the west.
Finally, the river continues south for about 6.4 km (4.0 mi) inside the SÉPAQ Anticosti. It then flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence on the south side of Anticosti Island. This meeting point is about 6.1 km (3.8 mi) from the western edge of SÉPAQ Anticosti. It is also about 39.2 km (24.4 mi) east of the village of Port-Menier.
