Riyo Mori (森 理世, Mori Riyo) (born December 24, 1986) is a famous dancer, model, and actress from Japan. She is best known for winning the title of Miss Universe 2007 in Mexico City.

Early Life and Dance

Riyo Mori was an only child and discovered her passion for dancing at the young age of four. She trained at the Quinte Ballet School and went to high school in Canada. She attended Centennial Secondary School in Belleville, Ontario, and also studied at Mount Douglas Secondary School in Victoria, British Columbia.

On August 28, 2018, Mori married Brent Kaspar, an American lawyer. They have one daughter together.

Winning Miss Universe 2007

On May 28, 2007, Riyo Mori was crowned Miss Universe. The previous winner, Zuleyka Rivera, passed the title to her.

The Competition

During the final competition, Mori was chosen as one of the top fifteen contestants. She earned the highest score in the swimsuit part of the competition. This moved her into the top ten.

For the evening gown competition, she wore a beautiful black and floral gown inspired by a traditional Japanese kimono. The dress was designed by Gucci. Her performance in this round placed her in the top five.

The Final Question

In the final round, a judge asked Mori about an important lesson she learned as a child. Mori explained that she grew up dancing, surrounded by teachers and other students. From them, she learned how to always be happy, patient, and positive. She said she wanted to teach these values to future generations.

Her thoughtful answer helped her win the crown. She became the second woman from Japan to ever win Miss Universe. The first was Akiko Kojima in 1959.

A Year as Miss Universe

After winning, Mori traveled the world to support humanitarian causes. She said, "I think I have a samurai soul, I'm very patient, and I can serve others." She visited many countries, including Indonesia, Spain, China, Mexico, Canada, and Germany.

A year later, on July 14, 2008, Mori crowned the next Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza from Venezuela.

Career in Television

After her time as Miss Universe, Riyo Mori planned to open a dance school in Tokyo. She also auditioned for a role in the American TV show Heroes.

Mori appeared on the MTV reality show Pageant Place in 2007. The show followed the lives of Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA titleholders. In 2010, she was also on the VH1 show The Price of Beauty to talk about beauty standards in Japan.

She has also served as a judge for the Miss Universe pageant, including in 2016 and 2019.
