Becoming Miss Universe 2007
The Competition Begins
Riyo Mori was crowned Miss Universe on May 28, 2007. The previous winner, Zuleyka Rivera, passed on the title to her. The final competition was shown all over the world.
Riyo was chosen as one of the top fifteen semi-finalists. These contestants moved on to compete for the main title.
Swimsuit and Evening Gown Rounds
She scored the highest in the swimsuit competition. This helped her move into the top ten. Next was the evening gown competition. Riyo placed fourth in this round.
Her beautiful evening gown was inspired by a traditional Japanese kimono. It was black with a floral design. The dress came from Gucci's Spring/Summer 2007 collection.
The Final Question
In the last part of the competition, Riyo was asked a question. Nina Garcia, a fashion director and TV judge, asked her about a life lesson. She wanted to know what lesson Riyo learned as a child that still helps her today.
Riyo explained that she had been dancing since she was little. This meant she was always around other students and teachers. From these experiences, she learned to be happy, patient, and positive. She also said she wanted to teach these important ideas to future generations.
Winning the Crown
After all the rounds, Riyo Mori was crowned Miss Universe. She was only the second woman from Japan to win this title. The first Japanese winner was Akiko Kojima in 1959. Riyo also became the eleventh Asian woman to win the pageant.
She was the third Japanese woman to reach the top five in Miss Universe in ten years. Miyako Miyazaki was fourth runner-up in 2003. Kurara Chibana was first runner-up in 2006.
After Her Win
Riyo Mori wanted to use her fame to help others. She said she had a "samurai soul," meaning she was patient and wanted to serve people. On July 14, 2008, Riyo crowned her successor. Dayana Mendoza from Venezuela became Miss Universe 2008. The crowning took place in Nha Trang, Vietnam.
