The Roach River is a small river in Virginia, a state in the United States. It is about 11.0-mile-long (17.7 km). This river is a tributary (say: TRIB-yoo-tair-ee), which means it's a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. The Roach River flows into the North Fork Rivanna River. All the water from the Roach River eventually becomes part of the James River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into one main river or body of water.

Where the Roach River Starts and Flows

The Roach River begins its journey high up at a place called Powell Gap. This spot is inside the beautiful Shenandoah National Park. From there, the river flows mostly southeast.

Journey Through Greene County

As it travels, the Roach River passes by two small communities: Bacon Hollow and Dyke. The entire river stays within Greene County. This means it doesn't cross into any other counties until it joins another river.

Joining Other Rivers

The Roach River eventually meets up with the Lynch River. When these two rivers join, they form the North Fork of the Rivanna River. This meeting point is just north of the Albemarle County line. So, the Roach River plays an important role in creating a larger river system in Virginia.
