Early Days of Roadstown

Before the American Revolution (the war where America became independent), Roadstown was an important place in the area. Back then, it was known as "Sayre's Cross-Roads" or "Sayre's Corners." It was named after Ananias Sayre, who was a respected citizen and the county sheriff.

Growing Community

In 1789, a farmer and chair-maker named Maskell Ware moved to Roadstown. He made chairs by hand, and today, chairs made by him are special items that collectors want.

The Cohansey Baptist Church moved to Roadstown in 1802. This church was started way back in 1683, making it the third oldest Baptist church in New Jersey. A post office was also set up in Roadstown in 1803.

By 1834, Roadstown had a tavern (a type of inn), two stores, and about 20 homes. Most of the people living there were farmers. By 1882, the community had grown to about 200 people.
