Robert James Collins (born February 23, 1963 – died July 22, 1996) was an English musician. He was best known as the original keyboard player for the band The Charlatans. Rob was born in Rowley Regis, England, and grew up in Willenhall.
Rob Collins and The Charlatans
Rob Collins joined The Charlatans in the late 1980s. The band's first song, "Indian Rope," became very popular. Soon after, their song "The Only One I Know" reached the top ten in 1990.
Rob's Unique Sound
Rob's way of playing the organ was very special. He used a swirling and layered style that gave the band a unique sound. This helped The Charlatans stand out from other bands at the time. Rob was also a main songwriter for the band. He helped create five successful albums with them.
A Sad Loss
Rob Collins began working on keyboard parts for The Charlatans' fifth album, Tellin' Stories. Sadly, he passed away in a car accident on July 22, 1996. This happened just before the album was finished.
Impact on Music
His sudden death was a shock to many people in the music world. It happened about three weeks before The Charlatans were set to play their biggest concert. They were going to support the band Oasis at Knebworth. Liam Gallagher, the lead singer of Oasis, dedicated their song "Cast No Shadow" to Rob. He said, "live forever, mate."
