Early Life and Family
Robbie Katter was born in North Queensland and grew up in a family with a long history in politics. His father, Bob Katter, is a well-known member of Australia's federal parliament. His grandfather, Bob Katter Sr., was also a federal politician. This makes the Katters a famous political family in Australia.
For his education, Robbie Katter went to the Queensland University of Technology. He earned a degree in Property Economics. Before becoming a politician, he worked in different jobs. He was a mine worker in Mount Isa, a property valuer, and also ran his own small business.
Political Career
Entering Queensland's Parliament
In 2012, Robbie Katter was elected to the Queensland Parliament. He won the election for the Mount Isa area. His family's well-known name in the region helped him win. After the election, he became the Queensland leader of his father's political party.
In 2017, the Mount Isa district was changed, and a new district called Traeger was created. Katter ran for election in this new district and won easily. He has continued to represent Traeger ever since. He won his elections again in 2020 and 2024, showing that he is very popular with voters in his area.
Leadership and Community Work
In February 2020, Robbie Katter officially became the leader of Katter's Australian Party. Besides his work in parliament, he is also involved in his local community. He helps manage a retirement home and an organization that works to protect the environment.
What Katter Believes In
Robbie Katter's political ideas often focus on supporting people in rural and regional areas, especially farmers and workers. This is sometimes called agrarian socialism, a term he proudly uses to describe his views.
Supporting North Queensland
One of Katter's biggest goals is to create a new state for North Queensland. He believes the northern part of the state is often overlooked by the government, which is based in the south. In 2024, he asked the Queensland Parliament to hold a vote, called a referendum, to let people in the north decide if they want their own state.
Other Political Stances
Katter has also shared his views on other topics. In 2020, he suggested that the Australian government should buy the airline Qantas. In 2022, he brought up a debate in parliament about the rules for athletes in women's sports. He also holds strong personal beliefs on social issues and has said he would propose new laws related to them.
Personal Life
Robbie Katter is married to Daisy Hatfield, who used to be a television journalist. They met when she was assigned to interview him for a story. The couple has three daughters: Peaches, Rosie, and Georgina.
