About Robbie Katter
Early Life and Education
Robbie Katter was born on March 3, 1977, in North Queensland. His father, Bob Katter, is also a politician. He is a federal member of parliament and started Katter's Australian Party. Robbie's grandfather, Bob Katter Sr., was also a federal politician. Robbie studied at the Queensland University of Technology. He earned a degree in Property Economics.
Starting His Career
Robbie Katter began his working life as a miner in Mount Isa. After that, he worked for 15 years as a property valuer. This means he helped figure out how much properties were worth. He also ran his own small business in Mount Isa.
His Political Journey
Robbie Katter started his political career in 2012. He won the election for the Mount Isa area. People in the area knew his family name well, which helped him win. Mount Isa was close to where his father and grandfather had also been politicians.
After being elected, he became the leader of his father's party in Queensland. Later, in November 2012, Ray Hopper became the leader. Robbie then took on a role as the party's "parliamentary secretary." When Hopper lost his seat in 2015, Robbie became the state leader again.
In 2017, the Mount Isa area he represented changed. A new area called Traeger was created. This new area included most of his former voters. Robbie won the election for the Traeger seat easily. He also helps out with a retirement home and an environmental group. In February 2020, he was officially named the leader of Katter's Australian Party. He won his seat in Traeger again in the 2020 state election.
Robbie Katter's Ideas
Robbie Katter has strong beliefs about how things should be run. He supports an idea called agrarian socialism. This means he believes in helping farmers and rural communities. He thinks the government should support these areas.
In 2020, he suggested that the Australian government should buy back Qantas Airline. This is a major airline in Australia. He also proposed a bill in May 2022. This bill was about setting rules for sports. It was voted on but did not pass.
Katter also wants North Queensland statehood. This means he wants North Queensland to become its own separate state. He believes this area is not getting enough attention from the rest of Queensland. He thinks North Queensland needs more investment and help with things like infrastructure and disaster relief. In May 2024, he asked the Queensland Parliament to consider this idea. He wants people in North Queensland to vote on it.
