History of Robbinsville
Robbinsville has a long and interesting history. It started as a trading post in the early 1840s. A trading post was a place where people could buy and sell goods.
Early Days and Naming
The town's first post office opened in 1843. It was first called Cheoah Valley, then Fort Montgomery. Robbinsville officially became a town on June 9, 1874. People believe the town was named after James L. Robinson. He was a state senator from North Carolina. The town got its water system in 1925.
The Graham County Courthouse
The first building for the Graham County Courthouse was built in Robbinsville in 1874. But its floor fell in during a murder trial about 20 years later! A new courthouse was built in 1895. This was the last wooden courthouse ever built in North Carolina. The building used today was finished in 1942.
Public Library History
Graham County's first public library opened in Robbinsville in 1939. The library joined a bigger system called the Nantahala Regional Library in 1940. The first library building was taken down in 1952. A new, bigger library opened on April 6, 1953.
Past Businesses in Town
Many companies have had factories in Robbinsville over the years. These included Bemis Lumber Company and American Uniform. James Lees Carpet Company was in Robbinsville from 1957 to 1971. It employed about 400 people. Later, this building became a Stanley Furniture factory. This factory was the town's biggest employer for a long time. It closed in 2014.
