Biography
Early Life and Start in Sports
Robby Robinson was born in Damascus, Georgia. He grew up in Tallahassee, Florida. He went to Florida A&M University. There, he played both football and competed in track & field.
While training for these sports, he noticed how well his body responded to weightlifting. This made him want to try bodybuilding. He competed in more than 300 amateur bodybuilding shows. In 1975, he became a professional bodybuilder. At that time, he was married and had three children.
Professional Bodybuilding Career
In 1975, his first year as a professional, Robby Robinson won three big titles. He won the IFBB Mr America, Mr World, and Mr Universe contests.
He continued to win many IFBB competitions. In 1979, he won the first Night of the Champions event. He also won the first Masters Olympia contest in 1994. He was the overall champion at the Masters Olympia in 1994. He also won the 50+ age group at the same contest in 1997 and 2000.
Robby Robinson appeared in the 1977 film Pumping Iron. This movie was partly a script and partly a documentary about bodybuilding. He also appeared in a TV documentary in 1989. In 1997, he was in the documentary Stand Tall. He also had an uncredited role in the 1976 comedy film Stay Hungry.
Life After Retirement
Robby Robinson faced some health challenges during his career. These health issues sometimes happened when he was getting ready for competitions. This was one reason he decided to stop competing.
After a 26-year career, Robby retired from professional bodybuilding in 2001. He was 55 years old. Since retiring, he has stayed very active. He works as a personal trainer and a coach for bodybuilding and healthy living. He is also an athlete, an artist, and an actor.
In 2013, Robby published his autobiography, a book about his life, called The Black Prince. Since his retirement, Robby has spoken out against using steroids in bodybuilding. He believes that steroids take away from the natural beauty and art of the sport. Even at 70 years old in 2016, Robby continued to make guest appearances at events.
