Robert Baddeley (1733–1794) was an English actor. We don't know who his parents were or exactly where he was born. He might have been born in London.
Before becoming an actor, Robert worked as a cook and a valet. One of his bosses was Samuel Foote, a famous actor and theater manager. Samuel Foote might have inspired Robert to start acting. Robert also traveled for three years with another employer on a "Grand Tour." This trip helped him learn many languages and accents. These skills became very important in his acting career.

Robert Baddeley's Acting Career
Early Stage Appearances
In 1760, Robert Baddeley started his acting career. He made his first stage appearance in one of Samuel Foote's plays. This play was shown at the Haymarket Theatre in London. Soon after, he performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London. He also acted at the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin.
Becoming a Drury Lane Star
By 1762, Robert was a full member of the Drury Lane company. He stayed with this theater for the rest of his career. He also performed during summer at the Haymarket Theatre. Robert was very good at playing funny characters. He often played servants or comical foreign characters. For example, he played Canton in the play The Clandestine Marriage.
In 1777, he took on the role of Moses in The School for Scandal. This part became the most famous role of his career.
Personal Life and Legacy
His Wife, Sophia
Robert Baddeley was married to Sophia Baddeley. She was even more famous than he was. They had a difficult relationship and eventually decided to live apart.
The Baddeley Cake Tradition
Robert continued acting almost until the day he died. He suffered from epilepsy. On November 19, 1794, he became ill while getting ready to play Moses in The School for Scandal. He passed away the next day.
In his will, Robert left money to the Drury Lane Theatre. He wanted £3 each year to buy wine and cake. This treat would be served in the green room on Twelfth Night. The "Baddeley Cake" ceremony is still a tradition today.
