Robert Harris Carnwath Dalzell, 11th Earl of Carnwath (born July 1, 1847 – died March 8, 1910) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier. He held a special title called a hereditary peerage, which means his noble title was passed down through his family.

Early Life and Family

Robert Dalzell was the oldest of five children. His parents were Robert Alexander George Dalzell and Sarah Bushby Harris. His father was a Colonel, a high rank in the army.

His mother, Sarah, was the daughter of John Harris, who served in the Royal Navy. John Harris was also an important person in Upper Canada, which is now part of Canada.

A Family of Nobles

Robert's grandfather was Robert Alexander Dalzell, the 6th Earl of Carnwath. The title of Earl of Carnwath had been taken away from the family for a while. But in 1826, a special law brought it back.

Before Robert became the 11th Earl, three of his uncles held the title. He inherited the title in 1887.

Marriage and Children

On August 19, 1873, Robert Dalzell married Emily Sulivan Hippisley. They had four children together:

  • Lady Ida Elizabeth Dalzell (born 1876)
  • Robert Hippisley Dalzell, Lord Dalzell (born 1877)
  • Lady Violet Charlotte Dalzell (born 1879)
  • Ronald Arthur Dalzell, 12th Earl of Carnwath (born 1883)

Military Career and Public Service

Robert Dalzell was a dedicated soldier. He served in a famous Scottish army group called the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant-colonel, which is a very senior officer.

As a Scottish noble, he also had a special role as a representative peer. This meant he was chosen to represent the Scottish nobility in the House of Lords in the British Parliament. It was an important job where he helped make laws and discuss important issues.

His Passing

Robert Dalzell passed away on March 8, 1910. He was walking from his home in Fulham to the House of Lords when he died.

His grave marker says "12th Earl of Carnwath". However, this was actually the title of his son, Ronald, who became the 12th Earl. This small mistake happened because sometimes people incorrectly counted an earlier family member, Robert Dalzell, 1st Lord Dalzell, as the "1st Earl."
