Bob DeProspero's Early Life and Career

Bob went to West Virginia University. He studied physical education and earned his first degree in 1959. He then got a master's degree in education in 1960.

After college, Bob joined the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1963. Then, he became a teacher at James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia. He taught biology and coached both football and wrestling.

Protecting the President

In 1965, DeProspero joined the United States Secret Service. He worked hard and moved up to many important jobs. In 1981, after an attempt to harm President Ronald Reagan, Bob took charge of the President's security detail. This team's main job was to keep the President safe.

The next year, DeProspero was chosen to lead the Presidential Protective Division. This is a very important role, overseeing all security for the President.

New Security Ideas

During his time in the Secret Service, Bob DeProspero created several new and important security methods. These ideas are still used today to keep leaders safe.

One idea was the "hospital agent." This means placing a Secret Service agent at the nearest main hospital whenever the President travels. This way, if there's an emergency, help is ready right away.

He also helped create metal detector checkpoints. These checkpoints screen everyone who might be able to see the President. This helps make sure no one dangerous gets too close.
