In 1806, Robert started studying at New College, Oxford. He earned his first degree in 1811 and a master's degree in 1813. In 1812, he became a chaplain at New College. At Purleigh, he was the main curate because the head priest, Edward Copleston, lived somewhere else. Edward Copleston was also the head of Oriel College, Oxford.

Robert Walker stayed in Purleigh for 30 years. He worked there until he became too unwell to continue. In 1848, he had a stroke, which is a serious health problem. He then moved to Great Baddow, a town near Chelmsford.
