Who Was Robert Anstruther?
Robert Hamilton Anstruther came from a well-known family. His father was Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Robert Anstruther of Balcaskie. Robert married Edith Flora Peel in 1890. They had a son named Colonel Philip Noel Anstruther, who was born in 1891.
Robert Anstruther joined the Royal Navy when he was young. He worked hard and moved up in rank.

He served on many different ships and in various important places around the world.
Missions and Commands
In 1900, Commander Anstruther was sent to the China station on the cruiser HMS Edgar. This was a relief mission. He was also the main naval officer on the Danube river between 1900 and 1902. During this time, he commanded a gunboat called HMS Cockatrice.
Later, he took command of the surveying ship HMS Hearty in 1902. He helped to map the seas. He was also the Senior Naval Officer for the North Sea Fisheries from 1902 to 1904. This meant he was in charge of naval activities related to fishing in that area. From 1906 to 1908, he did a similar job for the Newfoundland Fisheries.
Important Recognition
In 1907, Robert Anstruther was honored with the title of Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG). This is a special award given for important service to the country.
From 1912 to 1916, he was the Commodore-in-Charge, Hong Kong. This was a very senior role, making him responsible for naval operations in Hong Kong. He was also the main officer for the coast of China during 1914 and 1916.
Leading the Scouts in Hong Kong
Beyond his naval duties, Robert Anstruther had another important role. In May 1915, he became the second Colony Commissioner for the Boy Scout Association, Hong Kong Branch. This means he helped lead and organize the Boy Scouts in Hong Kong, teaching young people important skills and values.
