Robert Hawthorne (born in 1822, died 1879) was a brave Irish soldier. He received the Victoria Cross (VC), which is the highest award for bravery in the face of danger for British and Commonwealth soldiers. It's a very special medal given for incredible courage.
A Brave Soldier's Story
Robert Hawthorne was about 35 years old when he showed amazing bravery. He was a Bugler in the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot, which was part of the British Army. This was during a big conflict called the Indian Mutiny in 1857.
The Battle of Delhi
On September 14, 1857, Robert Hawthorne was part of a group of soldiers. Their mission was to get into the city of Delhi. They needed to break through a strong entrance called the Kashmiri Gate. This gate had to be blown up first.
Robert Hawthorne was with the team that was going to set off the explosives. This was a very dangerous job. While they were working, Lieutenant Salkeld, an engineer, was badly hurt. He was wounded by a lot of gunfire.
His Amazing Bravery
Even though it was very dangerous, Bugler Hawthorne didn't just do his own job. He quickly went to help Lieutenant Salkeld. Under heavy enemy fire, he carefully bandaged the lieutenant's wounds. Then, he made sure Lieutenant Salkeld was moved to safety without getting hurt even more.
For his incredible courage and quick thinking, Robert Hawthorne was given the Victoria Cross. This award recognized his bravery in helping a wounded officer while under attack.
Later Life and Legacy
Robert Hawthorne passed away in Manchester, England, on February 2, 1879. He was buried in Ardwick Cemetery. Sadly, his grave no longer has a headstone because they were removed many years ago.
Today, you can see Robert Hawthorne's Victoria Cross medal. It is displayed at the Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum in Winchester, England. It reminds everyone of his heroic actions.
