About Robert Jacobsen
Robert Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark. He taught himself how to be a sculptor, meaning he learned to create art on his own without going to a special art school.
During World War I, he worked with other Danish artists. These artists were part of a group that liked new and modern art styles. They were involved with a magazine called Helhesten. Later, some of them formed a famous art group called COBRA. Even though Robert Jacobsen was friends with the COBRA artists, he was never an official member of their group.
In those early years, he made large sculptures out of strong materials like granite and sandstone. He called these artworks "Mythical Creatures." Later, in the late 1940s, he created another group of sculptures he called "Dolls."
Life in France and Denmark
In 1947, Robert Jacobsen moved to France with his friend and fellow artist, Richard Mortensen. He lived there for many years, until 1969. While in France, he started making sculptures from cast iron. Because he was a big man, his friends in France gave him the nickname "Gros Robert," which means "Big Robert."
From 1962 to 1981, he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. This meant he taught art to students there. In 1969, he moved back to Denmark, to a place called Tågelund. He continued teaching art, becoming a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1976 to 1985.
From 1986 to 1991, Robert Jacobsen worked with another artist named Jean Clareboudt. Together, they created a special outdoor art space called a sculpture park. This park is located at the Tørskind Gravel Pit in Denmark. He also worked very closely with his son-in-law, Bernard Leauté, who helped him with his art.
Robert Jacobsen passed away in 1993 when he was 80 years old. He was buried in Copenhagen.
Awards and Recognition
Robert Jacobsen received many important awards for his art. In 1967, he was given the Thorvaldsen Medal, which is a very high honor for artists in Denmark. He also became an honorary member of the Association of Craftsmen in Copenhagen in 1973.
In 1974, the King of Sweden gave him the Prince Eugen Medal. This award is for artists who have done great work. In 1983, he was made a Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog, which is a special Danish award given by the Queen.
The Robert Awards are famous film awards in Denmark. They have been given out every year since 1984. These awards are named after Robert Jacobsen because he designed the statuette (the small statue) that winners receive.
