Robert Lantos: A Film Producer's Journey
Early Life and Moving to Canada
Robert Lantos was born in Budapest, Hungary, on April 3, 1949. His parents were Ágnes and László Lantos. When he was a child, his family moved to Montevideo, Uruguay. They left Hungary after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. In 1963, Robert Lantos moved to Canada.
Education and Starting in Film
Lantos studied literature at McGill University in Montreal. He earned his first degree in 1970 and a master's degree in 1972. After finishing university, he started a company called Vivafilm. This company brought foreign films to Canada for people to watch. Later, he created another company, RSL Entertainment. This company produced fifteen films. Some of their notable movies included In Praise of Older Women and Joshua Then and Now.
Building a Film Empire
Robert Lantos helped start a big Canadian film and TV company. It was called Alliance Communications Corporation. He worked as the chairman and CEO of this company. In 1998, he sold his share in Alliance. Today, he produces films through his company, Serendipity Point Films.
Award-Winning Films and TV Shows
Lantos has produced 40 feature films. Many of his movies have won important awards or been nominated for them. For example, Barney's Version won a Golden Globe. Eastern Promises and Being Julia were nominated for Golden Globes and Academy Awards. His film The Sweet Hereafter won a big award at the Cannes Film Festival. Other well-known films he produced include Existenz, Adoration, Crash, and Men with Brooms.

Robert Lantos is a member of the Order of Canada. This is a high honor given to people who have made a big difference in Canada. He also has an honorary degree from McGill University. He has served on the boards of many important organizations. These include the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Toronto International Film Festival. He was also a past chairman of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
He has received several awards for his work in filmmaking. In 1991, he won the Air Canada Award for his great contributions to the film business in Canada. He also received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1995. In 2015, he won the Feature Film Producer's Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
