Robert Paltock (born 1697, died March 20, 1767) was an English writer and a lawyer. He is best known for his exciting adventure book, The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins, a Cornish Man, which was published in 1751.

About Robert Paltock

Robert Paltock was born in 1697. He was the only son of Thomas Paltock. Robert became a lawyer, also known as an attorney, which means he helped people with legal matters. He lived in London for a while, in places like Clement's Inn and later in Lambeth.

He married Anna Skinner. Through her, his son, also named Robert, inherited some land in a place called Ryme Intrinseca in Dorset. Robert Paltock passed away in London on March 20, 1767, and was buried in Dorset.

His Famous Book: Peter Wilkins

Robert Paltock's most famous book is The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins. It's an adventure story that reminds some people of Robinson Crusoe.

What makes this book special is the "gawry," a flying woman. The main character, Peter Wilkins, discovers her on an island and they get married.

Even though some people found parts of the book a bit slow, many famous writers really liked it. These included Walter Scott, Robert Southey, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Leigh Hunt, and Charles Lamb.

The book was printed many times. A new edition with an introduction by A. H. Bullen came out in 1884. It was also translated into other languages, like French in 1763 and German in 1767.
