Robert Ross was a Scottish nobleman. He held the title of the 5th Lord Ross of Halkhead. He was born in 1563 and passed away in 1595.
His Family Background
Robert was the oldest son of James Ross, 4th Lord Ross. His father died in 1581. Robert's mother was Jean Sempill. She was the daughter of Robert Sempill, 3rd Lord Sempill.
The Ross family lived in Halkhead, which is in Renfrewshire, Scotland. They were a family from the Scottish Lowlands. They were not connected to the Earls of Ross or the Ross family from the Scottish Highlands.
Important Land Holdings
Robert took control of the lands of Halkhead in 1581. He also gained control of Broomlands and "Roisholm" in 1583. In 1590, he received the lands of Tarbert in Ayrshire.

Attending Parliament
On May 19, 1584, Robert Ross attended a parliament meeting in Edinburgh. At this meeting, some important noblemen were found guilty of serious charges. These included the Earl of Angus, the Earl of Mar, and Lord Glamis.
Disagreement with the King
Later in his life, Robert Ross had some disagreements with King James VI. In 1591, the King asked Mure of Caldwell to help convince Ross to pay rents. These rents were owed to royal servants for the lands of Foulbar.
However, Robert Ross did not pay the rents. So, in September 1591, King James wrote to Lord Hamilton. The King told Lord Hamilton that Ross was still not cooperating. He asked Lord Hamilton to take action to make Ross follow the law.
His Passing
Robert Ross died in October 1595. An English diplomat named George Nicholson wrote that Ross died from an injury. This injury was caused by an accident involving his gun. After his death, Walter Stewart, 1st Lord Blantyre was put in charge of his estates.
His Family
Robert Ross married Jean Hamilton. She was the daughter of Gavin Hamilton of Raploch. Jean outlived Robert. She later married Sir Robert Melville and passed away in May 1631.
Robert Ross had two sons who were legally recognized:
- James Ross, 6th Lord Ross
- Robert (who died in March 1617)
He also had a daughter named Elspeth. She married James Miller, who was a lawyer.
