James Ross, 6th Lord Ross facts for kids
James Ross, 6th Lord Ross of Halkhead (died 17 December 1633) was an important Scottish nobleman. He inherited his title and lands from his family. Noblemen were powerful people in Scotland long ago. They owned large areas of land and had a say in how the country was run.
Who Was James Ross?
James Ross was the oldest son of Robert Ross, 5th Lord Ross. His mother was Jean Hamilton. Robert Ross passed away in October 1595.
The Ross family of Halkhead lived in Renfrewshire, a part of Scotland known as the Lowlands. This family was different from the Earls of Ross or the Ross family from the Highlands.
Lands and Property
James Ross officially became the heir to his grandfather's lands on 13 February 1600. He also became the heir to his father's lands on 13 September 1615. These lands included places like Tartrevan and Prestoun.
He also received official documents, called charters, for other lands. These included Easter Stanley in Renfrewshire in 1631. He also gained Corsbar and Inglistoun in 1632, and Craig and Balone in 1632 or 1633.
His Public Life
James Ross was involved in the government of Scotland. He attended the Scottish Parliament on 22 June 1617. He voted against a set of new church rules called the Five Articles of Perth on 4 August 1621.
He also attended special meetings called Conventions. These meetings happened on 27 October 1625 and 28 July 1630. James Ross was also part of a meeting of the Privy Council on 20 April 1626. The Privy Council was a group of advisors to the King.
James Ross passed away on 17 December 1633. He was buried in Renfrew.
His Family Life
In 1614 or 1615, James Ross married Margaret Scott. She was the daughter of Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch. After James Ross died, Margaret married Alexander Montgomerie, 6th Earl of Eglinton. She passed away on 5 October 1651.
James and Margaret had several children:

- William Ross, 8th Lord Ross
- Robert Ross, 9th Lord Ross
- Margaret (born 19 December 1615; died 10 March 1633). She married Sir George Stirling of Keir in December 1630.
- Mary, who married John Hepburn of Waughton.
- Jean, who married Sir Robert Innes of Innes.
