Lord Ross facts for kids
The title of Lord Ross was a special noble rank in Scotland. It was part of the Peerage of Scotland, which means it was a title given by the King or Queen of Scotland. This title was first created in 1499 for a knight named Sir John Ross, who lived in a place called Halkhead.
The second Lord Ross sadly died in a famous battle called the Battle of Flodden. Much later, in 1715, the 12th Lord Ross was given an important job as the Lord Lieutenant of Renfrew, which was like a royal representative in that area. In 1732, he also inherited Balnagown Castle and became the leader, or Chief, of Clan Ross. It's interesting to note that even though they became Chiefs of Clan Ross, the Ross family of Halkhead were not direct descendants of the very old Earls of Ross. The title of Lord Ross eventually ended, or became "extinct," when the 14th Lord Ross passed away on August 19, 1754.
After the title ended, the family connections continued. Elizabeth, who was a daughter of the 13th Lord Ross, married John Boyle, 3rd Earl of Glasgow. Their son, George Boyle, 4th Earl of Glasgow, was later given a new title in 1815 called Baron Ross, of Hawkhead. This new title was part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom, but it also ended in 1890 when his son, George Boyle, 6th Earl of Glasgow, died. Another daughter of the 13th Lord, Grizel, married Sir James Lockhart, 2nd Baronet. Their family later inherited Balnagown and became the Chiefs of Clan Ross, taking on the name Lockhart-Ross.
