William Ross, 8th Lord Ross facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Ross, 8th Lord Ross of Halkhead (who passed away in August 1640) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of Lord Ross, which was a special position in Scotland long ago.

William Ross was the second son of James Ross, 6th Lord Ross. His mother was Margaret, whose father was Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch.

William became the Lord Ross after his older brother, James, died in March 1636 in a place called Jaffa. This meant William took over the family title and responsibilities.

The Ross family of Halkhead (also known as Hawkhead) lived in a part of Scotland called Renfrewshire. They were a family from the Scottish Lowlands. They were not connected to the Earl of Ross or the Highland family of Clan Ross from Balnagown.

Becoming Lord Ross

When William's older brother James died, William became the new Lord Ross. This meant he inherited the title and the family's lands. On September 8, 1636, he officially became the owner of lands like Broomlands, Melville, and Stanehouse. Being a Lord meant he had a special place in society and was responsible for his family's estates.

His Passing

William Ross never married. He died in August 1640. After his death, his younger brother, Robert, became the next Lord Ross.
