Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert Sempill (born in 1672 – died on November 11, 1737) was a Scottish soldier who served in France. He was also a Jacobite, meaning he supported the exiled Stuart kings of Scotland and England. From 1712, he was known as Lord Sempill.

Who Was Robert Sempill?

Robert Sempill was an important figure during a time when many people in Scotland supported the return of the Stuart royal family to the throne. He spent much of his life in France, serving in the French army.

Early Life and Military Career

Robert Sempill was born in Castle Semple, Scotland. His father was Archibald Sempill of Dykehead. Robert was also the grandson of Hugh Sempill, who was the 5th Lord Sempill.

Because he was a Roman Catholic, Robert was sent to France for his education. By 1688, when he was around 16 years old, he became an ensign. This is a junior officer rank in the French royal Scottish Guards.

Later, in 1708, he became a captain in the Regiment of Galmoy. He then moved to the Regiment of Dillon in the Irish Brigade in 1715. These were famous military units.

A Special Title: Lord Sempill

On May 11, 1712, something special happened for Sempill. The exiled king, James Francis Edward Stuart, gave him a special declaration. This statement recognized Sempill as the rightful heir to his family's noble title. It made him Lord Sempill of Dykehead in what was called the Jacobite peerage.

This was a special title given by the exiled king. It was different from the official title of Lord Sempill in Scotland. That official title was still held by another family member, Francis Sempill, who was the 10th Lord Sempill.

Family and Legacy

Robert Sempill married Elizabeth Abercromby. They had four children together. After Robert passed away, his oldest son, Francis Sempill, took over his role. Francis became a very important person working for the Jacobite cause in Paris.
