Robert John Service FBA (born October 29, 1947) is a British historian, academic, and author. A historian is someone who studies and writes about the past. Robert Service has written many books about the history of the Soviet Union. This was a very large country that existed from 1922 to 1991.
He focused especially on the period from the October Revolution in 1917 until the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953. This was a very important time in Russian history.
Until 2013, Service was a professor of Russian history at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. He was also a fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford. A fellow is a senior member of a college. He was also a senior fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution in the United States.
Robert Service has written important biographies, which are books about people's lives. His biographies are about three major figures in Soviet history: Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, and Leon Trotsky. Since 1998, he has been a Fellow of the British Academy. This is a special honor for experts in humanities and social sciences.
