Robert John Service FBA (born October 29, 1947) is a famous British historian and writer. He has written many books about the history of the Soviet Union. This includes the time from the October Revolution to the death of Joseph Stalin.
Until 2013, he was a professor of Russian history at the University of Oxford. He was also a Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford. He worked as a senior Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. He is best known for writing life stories (biographies) of important leaders. These include Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, and Leon Trotsky. He has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 1998. This is a special honor for top scholars.
