Early Life and Family Legacy

Robert William Mylne was born in a place called Great Amwell in Hertfordshire. His family had a strong history in engineering. His father, William Chadwell Mylne, and his grandfather, Robert Mylne, were both chief engineers for the New River Company. This company was very important for supplying water.

Becoming an Engineer and Architect

Just like his father and grandfather, Robert William Mylne became an architect and an engineer. In 1836, he helped design new docks in Sunderland. He also traveled to Italy and Sicily in the early 1840s, learning more about design and construction.

For twenty years, he worked as his father's assistant. During this time, he became an expert on how to supply water to cities. Later, he was chosen to be the Engineer for the Limerick Water Company. He also helped provide fresh water for one of the forts at Spithead.

Mapping London's Geology
