Biography of Roberto Farias
Roberto Farias was the brother of actor Reginaldo Faria. A small mistake by a notary added an "s" to his brother's last name. Roberto's love for movies started very early. His mother took him to the cinema when he was just a baby. By age 8, he was already making "movies" at home using shoe boxes!
He moved from Nova Friburgo to Rio de Janeiro to study Fine Arts or Architecture. But his true passion was always filmmaking. Throughout his career, Roberto worked as an assistant, editor, screenwriter, producer, and distributor. However, he never became an actor himself.
His journey in film began at Atlântida Cinematográfica. There, Watson Macedo hired him as an assistant director. His first work was on the drama Maior que o Ódio. He helped with almost ten films before directing his own movie in 1957. This first film was "Rico Ri à Toa", starring Zé Trindade. Roberto not only directed it but also wrote the script and dialogues.
In 1960, Roberto directed Cidade Ameaçada. This film won many awards and made him one of Brazil's most respected filmmakers. He became even more famous with Assalto ao Trem Pagador in 1962.
Founding a Production Company
In the 1960s, Roberto Farias started his own company, R.F.Farias production. It became one of the most important film companies in Brazil. He became a very popular director after making a series of three films with the famous singer Roberto Carlos. The first film was "Roberto Carlos em Ritmo de Aventura" in 1968. The series ended in 1971 with "Roberto Carlos a 300 Quilômetros por Hora".
Roberto also held important positions in the film industry. He was the president of the Sindicato Nacional da Indústria Cinematográfica. He was also the first filmmaker to lead Embrafilme, a major Brazilian film company. At TV Globo, a big TV network, he directed shows like Câmara Indiscreta in 1965. Later, he directed several miniseries, including A Máfia no Brasil, As Noivas de Copacabana, Contos de Verão, and Maria Moura Memorial. He also worked on TV programs like "Você Decide", Brava Gente (1996), Sob Nova Direção, and Faça a Sua História.
Roberto Farias passed away in Rio de Janeiro on May 14, 2018. He was 86 years old and was receiving treatment for cancer.
