Robert Young's Life Story
Early Life and Education
Robert Young was born in Scotland. His parents were Alexander Young and Margaret Bucanan. He studied medicine in Spain. After finishing his studies, he traveled to Buenos Aires. He arrived on a ship that belonged to the South Sea Company. This company had its offices in the Retiro area of Buenos Aires.
Working as a Doctor
Robert Young first worked for the Royal English Company. Later, the local government in Buenos Aires hired him. They assigned him to work at the Fort of Buenos Aires. Young was originally a Protestant. In 1737, he decided to become a Catholic.
In Buenos Aires, Robert Young worked as a surgeon. He often worked with two other surgeons, Robert Fontaine and Robert Espren. People sometimes called them the "three Roberts."
Starting a Brewery
Robert Young also started the very first Brewery in Buenos Aires. A brewery is a place where beer is made. His company used enslaved people to help package the beer. Because of this, the Governor of Buenos Aires fined Robert Young.
Later Life and Legacy
Robert Young passed away in 1743. In his will, he left all his belongings to the Jesuits in Buenos Aires. The Jesuits are a religious group.
