About Robeson Channel

Where is it?

The Robeson Channel is found in the very cold, icy northern parts of the world. It acts like a watery highway between two large landmasses: Greenland and Ellesmere Island in Canada. This channel is a key part of the Nares Strait, which is a long, narrow passage of water.

How Big is it?

The Robeson Channel is about 50 miles (80 km) long. Its width changes, being anywhere from 11 to 18 miles (18 to 29 km) wide. Close to this channel is Alert, Nunavut, which is the most northern place in the world where people live all the time.

How it Got its Name

The Robeson Channel was named during an important trip called the Polaris Expedition in 1871. It was named after an American man named George M. Robeson. He was the Secretary of the Navy at that time, working for President Ulysses S. Grant.
