Early Life and Education

Robin Bridgeman was the son of Brigadier Geoffrey Bridgeman and Mary Meriel Gertrude Talbot. His grandfather was William Bridgeman, the 1st Viscount Bridgeman. Robin attended Eton College, a well-known school in England.

He also served in the military. From 1950 to 1951, he was part of the Rifle Brigade as a second lieutenant. Later, he served in the Royal Green Jackets, reaching the rank of lieutenant.

A Career in Finance and Public Service

In 1958, Lord Bridgeman became a chartered accountant. This means he was a professional who managed financial records and advised on money matters. He worked as a partner in several financial firms, including Fenn and Crosthwaite, and Henderson Crosthwaite.

He also held leadership positions in various companies. For example, he was a director at Guinness Mahon and Nestor-BNA. Since 1972, he was a director of The Bridgeman Art Library, which helps share art with the world.

Beyond his business career, Robin Bridgeman dedicated much of his time to public service and charity. He was the chairman of the Friends of Lambeth Palace Library and the treasurer for the New England Company. He also supported the Florence Nightingale Aid in Sickness Trust. He served as chairman of the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth and was a trustee for Music at Winchester. From 1992 to 2000, he was a special trustee for the Hammersmith and Queen Charlotte's Hospital Authority.

He was also a Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, an ancient organization known for its humanitarian work.

Role in the House of Lords

Robin Bridgeman inherited his title as Viscount on November 17, 1982, after his uncle, the 2nd Viscount, passed away. He became one of the ninety elected hereditary peers in the House of Lords. This meant he had a seat in Parliament.

In the House of Lords, he represented the Conservative Party. He served as a spokesman on Home Affairs, which means he spoke for his party on issues related to law and order, immigration, and public safety. He also worked as a Government Whip, a role that helps ensure party members vote according to the party's policies.
