Professor Sir Robin William Grimes is a British scientist who studies materials. He is a top science advisor for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in the UK, focusing on nuclear science and technology. He is also a professor at Imperial College London, where he teaches about the physics of materials. From 2013 to 2018, he was the chief science advisor for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Since November 2021, he has been the Foreign Secretary of The Royal Society, a very old and respected group of scientists.

Education and Early Life
Sir Robin Grimes went to school at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys in Birmingham. He then studied at the University of Nottingham and Case Western Reserve University. He earned his PhD from Keele University in 1988. His research there involved studying tiny flaws in materials.
What He Does: Career and Research
Sir Robin Grimes uses powerful computer simulations and high performance computing (HPC) to understand materials. He predicts how materials like ceramics, metals, and semiconductors will behave. These materials are important for energy.
Understanding Materials at a Tiny Level
His work helps identify how very small flaws, called "atomic scale defects," change how materials work. He has looked at many properties, like how well materials conduct heat (their thermal conductivity). He also studies how materials bend or change shape, and how atoms move through solid objects. While he is well-known for studying materials used in nuclear power, he also works on systems like batteries (called electrochemical systems) and materials used in electronics and optics.
Science and Diplomacy
Sir Robin Grimes helped create "science diplomacy" within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This means using science as a tool to help countries work together. He used scientific evidence and connections with scientists around the world. This helped make science collaboration a key part of important international relationships for the UK. He continues to be a leader in the academic community that studies nuclear power.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Sir Robin Grimes has received many important awards for his work.
- In 2013, he became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng).
- In 2018, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). This is a very high honor for scientists.
- In 2022, he was made a Knight by the King. This was for his important work in helping the UK stay strong and for building science relationships with other countries.
- He has also received honorary doctorates from Aston University in 2022 and Lancaster University in 2024. These are special degrees given to people who have achieved great things.
