The Rochester Rock Art Panel in Emery County, Utah, USA, is a special place with many ancient drawings carved into rocks. These drawings are called petroglyphs. They were made by different groups of people over a very long time. Some of the oldest drawings were made by the Fremont culture, who lived in this area many centuries ago.
Other drawings on the panel are more recent. They show things like horses, or look like they were made by explorers, settlers, or even tourists from long ago. You might also see some modern graffiti near the main panel.
Most of the panel is covered with a dark layer called "desert varnish." This dark layer makes the lighter sandstone underneath stand out when the petroglyphs are carved into it. In the middle of the panel, some parts of the stone are very light. It looks like pieces of the original rock were taken away, perhaps by people who wanted to keep the carved figures.
Discovering the Rock Art Panel
The Rochester Rock Art Panel is located about 3 miles east of Emery, Utah. It's a bit hidden, but you can get there by following a dirt road. This road starts from a turnoff near the town of Moore.
How to Get There
To find the panel, drive on Highway 10 between the towns of Emery and Ferron. Look for the turnoff between mile markers 16 and 17. Take the paved road heading east towards Moore for about half a mile. Then, turn south onto a well-maintained dirt road. Drive for about 4 miles, and you will pass a radio tower. From the parking lot, there's a clear hiking trail. This trail is about half a mile long and leads along a small canyon right to the panel.
