Rocinha means "little farm" in Portuguese. It is a very large neighborhood in Brazil. It is located in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone. The neighborhood sits between the areas of São Conrado and Gávea.
Rocinha is built on a steep hill. It looks out over the city of Rio de Janeiro. The neighborhood is also about one kilometer from a nearby beach. Many trees grow around the area. About 180,000 people live here. This makes it one of the most populated neighborhoods in Brazil.
Rocinha is officially called a neighborhood. However, many people still call it a favela. A favela is a type of community that started as a shanty town. Over time, it grew into a more developed urban area. Today, most houses in Rocinha are made of concrete and brick. Some buildings are three or four stories tall. Almost all homes have basic services like water, plumbing, and electricity.
Compared to simpler favelas, Rocinha has good services. It has many businesses, like banks and pharmacies. There are also bus routes and even a local TV channel called TV ROC. At one point, there was even a McDonald's restaurant. These things help Rocinha be known as a favela bairro. This means it is a "favela neighborhood."
