Rock Springs was first settled in 1851. It was named Ableman after Stephen Van Rensselaer Ableman, who was an early settler. The village grew a lot because of the railroad. Trains helped bring people and goods to the area.

Just south of the village, you can find a special rock called Van Hise Rock. It is in Ableman Gorge, surrounded by tall cliffs. This rock was used by a professor named Charles R. Van Hise to teach about how the Earth's crust changes. This field of study is called structural geology.
