The Ribes quercetorum is a type of currant plant. People often call it the rock gooseberry, oak gooseberry, or oakwoods gooseberry. It's a plant that grows naturally in the mountains and hills.

Where This Plant Lives

This special plant is found in California, starting from the San Francisco Bay Area. It grows south into Baja California and east into Arizona. You can find Ribes quercetorum in different places. It likes woodlands, areas with chaparral (a type of shrubland), and dry desert slopes. It also grows in canyons.

What the Oak Gooseberry Looks Like

The Ribes quercetorum is a shrub that spreads out. Its stems can arch and grow up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) long. Along these stems, you'll find small bumps called nodes. Each node has 1 to 3 spines, which can be up to 1.5 centimeters (about 0.6 inches) long.

Leaves, Flowers, and Fruit

The leaves of this plant are a bit hairy and sticky. They can grow up to 3 centimeters (about 1.2 inches) long. Each leaf is divided into a few parts, and these parts have jagged or lobed tips.

The plant produces small groups of flowers called an inflorescence. Each group usually has 2 or 3 tiny flowers. Every flower has five yellow parts that bend backward. Inside, there's a tube-shaped ring of smaller, cream-colored petals.

After the flowers, the plant grows a round, black berry. These berries are edible and are just under a centimeter (about 0.4 inches) across.
