Rockley's Story: A Look Back in Time
Rockley became a proper township in 1848. This happened after a copper mine opened about 8 kilometers away, and people also discovered gold in the area. Before it was a town, the land was given as a farm to a person named William Lawson in 1818. Later, it was given to Captain Watson Augustus Steel. He decided to name the property "Rockley" after the place where he was born in Rockley, Wiltshire, England.
