Rodney Craig Hampton (born April 3, 1969) is a former American football player. He was a running back for the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL).
Rodney played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs. The Giants picked him in the first round of the 1990 NFL draft. He was a key player for the 1990 New York Giants team. They had a great season, winning 13 games and losing only 3. This team went on to win Super Bowl XXV on January 27, 1991.
Rodney Hampton's Football Journey
Rodney Hampton is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed about 215 pounds. He came from the University of Georgia and went to Kashmere High School in Houston, Texas. He played his entire professional career with the New York Giants. This was from 1990 to 1997.
Rodney was chosen for the Pro Bowl two times, in 1992 and 1993. The Pro Bowl is an all-star game for the best players in the NFL. He ran for 6,897 yards in his career. This was the most rushing yards in Giants history for a long time. Later, another player named Tiki Barber broke his record in 2004. Rodney was a part of the Giants team that won Super Bowl XXV.
Early Career and Success
Rodney's first year as a professional player was cut short because of an injury. But after that, he became one of the team's most important offensive players. For five seasons in a row, from 1991 to 1995, he ran for over 1,000 yards each year. Running for 1,000 yards in a season is a big achievement for a running back.
After the 1995 season, another team, the San Francisco 49ers, tried to sign Rodney. But the Giants quickly offered him a new contract, and he stayed in New York.
Later Seasons and Retirement
In the 1996 season, Rodney ran for over 800 yards. He shared playing time with another running back, Tyrone Wheatley. In 1997, Rodney had surgery on his knee before the season started. This injury happened late in the 1996 season. He was only able to play in two games late in the 1997 season. He also played in the Giants' only playoff game that year.
The Giants let Rodney go before the 1998 season. He said he wanted to keep playing football. A couple of teams even asked about him. But when the season started, he didn't get any offers. So, Rodney decided to retire from football.
