Rodney Earl McCray, born on August 29, 1961, is a former American basketball player. Standing 6 feet 7 inches tall, he played as a small forward. Rodney spent 10 seasons, from 1983 to 1993, in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During his career, he scored a total of 9,014 points and grabbed 5,087 rebounds.
College Basketball Career
Rodney McCray went to the University of Louisville. He was a very important player for the Louisville Cardinals team. In 1980, his team won the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. This is a huge college basketball tournament. His teammates included his brother, Scooter McCray, and other famous players like Darrell Griffith and Derek Smith.
Rodney was even chosen for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. However, he could not go to the Olympics. This was because the United States decided to boycott the games that year. Years later, in 2007, he received a special Congressional Gold Medal. This medal was given to the athletes who missed out on the Olympics.
Professional Basketball Career
Rodney McCray began his professional career in the NBA. The Houston Rockets picked him third overall in the 1983 NBA draft. He played with the Rockets for four seasons. During his time there, he averaged about 10.8 points per game. He scored double-digit points in eight of his first nine seasons.
Rodney was known as a great defender. He was even named to the NBA All-Defensive Team twice. This happened in 1987 and 1988. In 1986, he helped the Rockets reach the NBA Finals. They played against Larry Bird's Boston Celtics but did not win the championship that year.
In 1988, Rodney was traded to the Sacramento Kings. Later, in 1990, he moved to the Dallas Mavericks. He played his final season with the Chicago Bulls. This happened after a trade involving three teams. Rodney ended his career in the best way possible. He won an NBA championship ring with the Bulls in 1993.
