High School Basketball Star
Rodrick Rhodes was a top player in high school from his first year. He was named a Parade All-American three times. This is a big honor for young basketball players.
He helped his high school team, St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, win two state championships. These wins happened in 1989 and 1991. Their coach was Bob Hurley. At one point, many thought Rodrick would be as successful as future NBA star Jason Kidd.
College Basketball Journey
Rodrick played college basketball at the University of Kentucky for three years. After that, he moved to the University of Southern California for his final year.
At Kentucky, his coach, Rick Pitino, asked him to take a "redshirt" year. This means a player practices with the team but does not play in games for a season. It's usually done to give a player more time to develop. However, some people, including Rodrick's high school coach, thought it was a way to make him leave.
Kentucky had a new star player joining, Ron Mercer. Some believed this might have led to the coach's decision. But Coach Pitino also asked other senior players to redshirt. These players later helped Kentucky win championships.
Playing in the NBA and Overseas
Rodrick Rhodes played in the NBA for three seasons. He played for the Houston Rockets, Vancouver Grizzlies, and Dallas Mavericks. His best year was his first season with the Rockets. He played in 58 games and scored about 5.8 points per game.
After leaving the NBA in 2000, Rodrick played basketball in other countries. He played professionally in places like Cyprus, Greece, the Philippines, France, and Puerto Rico.
Coaching Basketball Teams
After his playing career, Rodrick Rhodes became a basketball coach. He worked as an assistant coach at several universities. These included the University of Texas Pan-American, the University of Massachusetts, and Seton Hall University.
In 2005, he was an assistant coach at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. He then moved to Idaho State University in 2006.
In 2011, Rodrick became a coach at Cordia High School in Kentucky. In 2014, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association found some issues with the Cordia basketball program. Rodrick's coaching contract with the school was not renewed.
In 2017, a documentary called "Us Against the World" was made about his time coaching at Cordia. This film was even nominated for an Emmy award in 2018.
Later, in 2017–2018, Rodrick became an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Northwest Nazarene University. In 2019, he was hired as the head coach for Concordia University-Portland for the 2020 season.
