Rodrigo Rodríguez (born August 29, 1978) is a talented musician from Spain. He is famous for playing the shakuhachi, a special Japanese flute. He also writes music and produces records.
Life and Music Journey
Rodrigo Rodríguez was born in Argentina in 1978. When he was eight years old, his family moved to Mallorca, Spain. He started learning classical Western music, like the guitar and how to compose, when he was 10.
Later, Rodrigo went to Japan to learn the shakuhachi. He studied with two very important teachers: Master Kaoru Kakizakai and Kohachiro Miyata. These masters taught him how to play this unique instrument.
In 2008, Rodrigo's album "Beyond the Times" was chosen as one of the Top 25 Albums by a radio show called Echoes. This was a big achievement!
Rodrigo has played his music all over the world. He has performed in famous places like the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and the Kōtoku-in Temple, home of the "Great Buddha" in Kamakura, Japan.
In 2012, he was invited to play in Moscow, Russia. He performed at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, a very famous music school, for an international festival.
In 2013, Rodrigo released an album called "The Road of Hasekura Tsunenaga". This album was special because it was dedicated to the first Japanese diplomatic trip to Spain, which happened way back in 1613.
Rodrigo often plays concerts to help people. In 2014, he performed in Japan to help with the recovery after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
He also played at the first International World Congress of Jikiden Reiki in Barcelona. There, he performed for Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese author and researcher.
In 2016, Rodrigo had his first concert in the United States, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
In 2018, he released his eighth album, "The Classical Music Legacy of Japan". This album features classic Japanese music. It also includes a famous Spanish song, Concierto de Aranjuez, played on the shakuhachi.
Later in 2018, Rodrigo played in New York City for the first time. He performed at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden's Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival).
He also released a single called "Shakuhachi: The Zen Flute (The Distant Call of the Deer)". This song was a special collaboration with his teacher, Kohachiro Miyata. It's a traditional piece that describes the sounds of deer in autumn in Japan.
In 2019, Rodrigo played concerts in the Philippine Islands at the Ma-Cho Temple and the Temple Bell Church. He likes to choose places with interesting history or beautiful architecture for his performances.
In 2020, Rodrigo released "For Luna (Variations of Neptune)", a song dedicated to his daughter. This music combines electronic sounds with the shakuhachi flute. It even has a music video with amazing footage from ESA and the Hubble Space Telescope!
In 2021, he released "Blowing Zen - Shakuhachi Meditation Music". This album is all about Suizen, which means "blowing zen" and is an ancient way of meditating with the shakuhachi.
In 2023, Rodrigo's music was featured in the video game Age of Empires IV. You can hear his work in a track called "Court of the Chrysanthemum".
In 2024, he released "Kohachiro Miyata: The Complete Masterworks for Shakuhachi". This album is a tribute to his teacher, Kohachiro Miyata, and features his best musical works.
Rodrigo continues to make music and perform around the world, sharing the beautiful sounds of the shakuhachi.
