Roger Cruz: A Comic Book Artist

Starting His Journey in Comics

Roger Cruz began his career in the world of comics as a letterer. This means he was the person who added all the words and speech bubbles to the comic pages. He worked for Editora Abril, a big publishing company in Brazil. There, he helped translate many American comics into Portuguese. He also worked on a magazine called Mil Perigos as a writer and art assistant.

Drawing for Big Comic Companies

Roger Cruz got a big chance to work for American comic book companies. He started drawing for Marvel Comics, one of the most famous comic publishers. He worked on many exciting titles like Ghost Rider, Hulk, and Uncanny X-Men. He also drew for Generation X and Silver Surfer.

He even worked for DC Comics, another huge comic book company. There, he drew for an issue of Batman Chronicles.

A Break and a New Path

In the late 1990s, Roger Cruz took a break from drawing comics. He went back to Brazil and helped start an art studio and school. It was called Fábrica de Quadrinhos, which means "Comic Book Factory." Today, it's known as Quanta Academia de Artes.

During this time, he also worked on other creative projects. He designed storyboards for commercials and characters for TV shows. He also taught art classes at universities for two years.

Back to Drawing Comics

Even while being a partner at Fábrica de Quadrinhos, Roger Cruz returned to drawing for American comics. He worked on titles for Top Cow Productions, like The Darkness. He also drew for Marvel again, on comics such as X-Men and Wolverine.

In 1999, he decided to focus only on drawing comics again. By 2002, he was illustrating issues of Wonder Woman. From 2004, he continued to work for Marvel. He was the artist for Amazing Fantasy and X-Men: First Class.

Recent Works and New Stories

Since 2019, Roger Cruz has been publishing more of his own original comics in Brazil. Some of these include Xampu- Lovely Losers. He also wrote Quaisqualingundum, which was based on songs by the composer Adoniran Barbosa. Another fun comic he created is A Irmandade Bege e Os Fabulosos, which is a funny take on the X-Men.
